Archaeological site of Ancient Pandosia
The ancient city of Pandosia was once a proud colony of the Hellenes, located on the hill of the present village of Kastri in the Municipality of Parga. With its commanding presence and breathtaking views, Pandosia was a hub of activity and civilization in its time.
“The Founding of Pandosia and Its Sister Cities”
Pandosia was founded in the 7th or 8th century BC, alongside other cities such as Vouchetio (present-day Nea Kerasounda), Elatreia (Old Oropos), and Vatesia (Rizovouni Thesprotiko), which were all founded by the Eleians. The site where Pandosia was established was previously home to a small town settlement of unknown name, but its oldest walls date back to the first half of the 4th century BC.
“Accessible by Sea and River: The Strategic Importance of Pandosia”
Pandosia was easily accessible by sea and through the navigable Acheron River, which was only 100-200 meters from the fortified city. At these points, metal rings were discovered, which were used to secure boats.
“The Mighty Walls of Pandosia: A Testimony to Its Power”
The walls of Pandosia stretched 1640 meters, encircling the top and southwestern side of the hill and extending to the foothills, covering an area of 330 acres. The walls were fortified with 11 rectangular defensive towers, which remain in excellent condition to this day. Two gates are still visible on the east side, and it is believed that a third gate existed on the northwest side.
With the arrival of the Thesprotians, the settlement expanded to the eastern slopes and was surrounded by a new polygonal wall, the remnants of which can still be seen on the north and northeast sides. This expansion increased the total perimeter of the castle to 2,300 meters, providing ample space for a population of 9,000-10,000 inhabitants. Some parts of the walls were also believed to be from the Justinian era.
